A SIRIS area velocity flow meter for effluent water allow for continuous testing of open channel flow without the need for a flume or weir and offer a solution for sites where cost, time or access are an issue.
This type of meter works by transmitting ultrasonic pulses that travel through the water and bounce off the surface of the liquid, measuring the precise time taken for the ‘echo’ to return to determine flow volume.
In addition to being sensitive enough to operate in a wide range of wastewater and clean water applications, a SIRIS area velocity flow meter for effluent water is robust enough to withstand continuous measurement and are guaranteed to meet all regulatory requirements.
An area velocity flow meter for effluent water operates on the area velocity method to continuously measure liquid flow.
A probe continuously transmits ultrasound into the liquid and registers any changes to its area velocity caused by particles passing through. This shift in frequency is used to provide a flow velocity measurement.
Area velocity flow meters can offer a good short-term fix where the cost of a more comprehensive solution isn’t currently an option and are also often used for surveys.
This type of meter is quick to install and doesn’t require a flume or weir. Wherever possible, we recommend opting for a weir tank or venturi flume installation to ensure greater
SIRIS flow meters carry MCERTS accreditation so you can be confident that the data provided is accurate and will provide reliable long-term flow measurement.
Our flow meters are designed to meet with relevant regulatory discharge and MCERTS requirements.
All SIRIS products can be used with our data monitoring software, Palette, however they are also compatible with your existing SCADA system. Our expert team is committed to working in partnership with our customers to meet their individual requirements and ensure our products fit seamlessly into each site.
We pride ourselves in offering a bespoke service to all of our clients. Our design and installation process ensures we provide you with a cost-effective solution tailored to suit your site’s individual requirements.
When you first contact SIRIS, our friendly team will be on hand to take your enquiry and assess your needs. We know that every site has different requirements, so we’ll work closely with you to understand your individual needs.
At this stage our wastewater management experts will provide a tailored quote for your system. For most sites we can do this using photographs, however for larger or more complicated sites we will arrange to visit you and assess it in person. If MCERTS is required we will ensure we develop a system that is fully compliant
Our team will assemble your bespoke system at our dedicated facility. We’ll also pre-calibrate any equipment that can be commissioned off-site.
We will arrange for your equipment to be delivered directly to site and liaise with your chosen contractor to advise on installation requirements. Depending on the project, we may also attend site to assist with the installation process.
Our specialist engineers will attend site to commission your equipment and check it’s working correctly. We’ll also go through your new system with you and answer any questions you have. Once we’ve completed the calibration we will be able to issue you with a CalCert which allows you to prove your site is fully compliant to auditors.
Our team is always on hand to support with any queries or teething problems you may be experiencing. For most sites we also recommend a bi-annual servicing package to ensure your equipment continues to function correctly.

“Area velocity flow meters can offer a good short-term solution for sites which don’t have a flume or weir and are a good choice to use for surveys. However, I don’t recommend using this kind of flow meter for ongoing measurement as they are difficult to independently verify which can compromise accuracy of results. While an area velocity flow meter can seem like an affordable choice, it’s a short-term fix which often ends up costing more in the long run.”
